The year of Elizabeth II's coronation Annie Latto is eleven. It is the summer that she and the folk in her Scottish glen will not soon forget. It sees the Midsummer's Eve when the mysterious Lal, he of supernatural powers, is reunited with his Isobel, dead over a hundred years, when the newly-constructed dam breaks and when ... 'The mother of landslides is heavy-hipped. The mother of rainbows speaks glory.' The sense of bedrock beauty and a feeling of historical injustice is very strong in this first novel by a former fiction editor of Spare Rib. I finished it wishing for more, for a fleshing out of the characters. Younger readers though may well find it a thought-provoking story as it stands.
